Health and safety is not a separate function from running the site: it is baked into every daily decision. My starting point is the Construction Phase Plan, which I review and update whenever the scope, sequence, or workforce changes materially. Every morning I run a toolbox talk with the trades on site, covering the day's activities and any specific hazards: working at height, plant movements, hot works, or excavations near existing services. I do a site inspection every morning before work starts and a closing inspection every afternoon, and I log both in the site diary. I operate a zero-tolerance policy on four things: no helmet, no high-vis, no harness at height, and unsafe plant operation. First offence gets a verbal warning logged. During a groundworks package on a commercial project, an operative suffered a crush injury to his hand when a trench support failed partially. My immediate actions were: call an ambulance, make sure the injured operative was not moved unnecessarily, isolate the area, and ensure the remaining operatives moved away from the trench. I then called my contracts manager and the principal contractor's site manager. Once the operative was receiving treatment and the site was secured, I preserved the scene and began gathering contemporaneous evidence: photographs, witness statements from two operatives who were present, and the plant operator's record sheet for that morning. On a refurbishment project, the architect issued an instruction to alter the position of a partition wall that would have affected a structural beam, without consulting the structural engineer. I flagged the issue immediately: the instruction as issued could not be implemented safely without a structural engineer's sign-off. The architect pushed back, suggesting the beam was not structural because it did not appear on the latest drawing issue. I retrieved the original structural drawings and the building control submissions and confirmed the beam was load-bearing. I requested an urgent review with the structural engineer, who confirmed that the beam could not be disturbed without temporary propping and a redesign of the bearing. This added ten days and approximately £4,000 to the programme. I documented the full sequence of events in a contract administration letter and notified the client of the variation cost. The client acknowledged the issue and instructed the variation. Under CDM 2015, the key dutyholders are the client, the principal designer, and the principal contractor, but the site manager has specific operational responsibilities that sit within the principal contractor's duties. My core obligations are to ensure the construction phase plan is in place before work starts and that it is kept up to date, to manage the site so that it is maintained in a safe condition, to coordinate activities to manage the risks from the interaction of different trades, and to ensure all workers receive a site induction before starting and have access to the information they need to work safely. I also contribute to the health and safety file that the principal designer maintains, providing as-built information and records of any changes to the design or method that are relevant to future maintenance or demolition. - Health and safety ownership, not just awareness. Employers want someone who can describe their actual daily safety practice, not someone who recites legislation. If you cannot explain how you run a toolbox talk or manage a subcontractor RAMS review, the interview will be short.
- Programme management discipline. The ability to build and maintain a rolling four-week programme, identify the critical path, and recover delays is the core technical skill. Candidates who manage by instinct rather than programme are a commercial risk.
- Subcontractor relationship management. Most construction work is done by subcontractors. Employers want to know you can get performance out of third parties without direct authority over how they are employed.
